Steps to getting a drivers license for under 18 year olds.

Official CA DMV website

Understanding the CA DMV website can be a bit confusing, for your convenience, we have summarized what is needed for under 18 year olds to get their driver's license.

  • PLEASE USE THIS LINK TO PRACTICE for your test.  It is not as easy as you think. Scroll to Regular driver (Class C license) and take the 4 practice exams.

  • Once you pass the knowledge test and have your provisional instruction permit, you will need to complete three 2-hours professional driver training.  Tahoe Driving Academy fulfills this requirement.

  • Complete 50 hours of practice with an adult 25 years old or older and has a valid California DL. They will certify you completed the 50 hours of practice.  Practice driving at night for at least 10 of the 50 practice hours is required.

  • Once you have completed three 2-hour lessons and 50 hours practice for 6 months, schedule a driving test appointment (driving tests are not given without an appointment). You may also call 1-800-777-0133 during regular business hours to make an appointment.
