Steps to getting a drivers license for under 18 year olds.
Understanding the CA DMV website can be a bit confusing, for your convenience, we have summarized what is needed for under 18 year olds to get their driver's license.

​Be at least 15½ but under 18.

Have a Certificate of Completion/Enrollment of Driver Education either at STHS school, home study, or on-line.

Complete the California Driver’s License or ID Card Application.

Have a parent(s)/guardian(s) sign the application.

Visit a DMV office (schedule an appointment), where you will:

Bring your California Identification Card or proof of identity and residency. (Federal Noncompliant/REAL ID/AB60)

Pay the application fee.

Pass a vision exam.

Take a photo.

Take the knowledge test(s). There are multiple choice questions based on the California Driver’s Handbook, and a passing score is 80%.

Once you pass the knowledge test and have your provisional instruction permit, you will need to complete three 2-hours professional driver training. Tahoe Driving Academy fulfills this requirement.

Complete 50 hours of practice with an adult 25 years old or older and has a valid California DL. They will certify you completed the 50 hours of practice. Practice driving at night for at least 10 of the 50 practice hours is required.

Once you have completed three 2-hour lessons and 50 hours practice for 6 months, schedule a driving test appointment (driving tests are not given without an appointment). You may also call 1-800-777-0133 during regular business hours to make an appointment.
